MISSION
The mission of the Competency Development Program (CDP) is to assist, guide, mentor, and supervise adolescents in the development of pro-social, moral reasoning, academic, workforce, and independent living skills to enable them to get a job, develop close healthy personal relationships, and to form positive attachments and bonds to social groups and institutions in order to integrate or re-integrate themselves into the social, public, community, school and family environments.
PURPOSE
It is designed to serve youth involved in the juvenile justice system, removed from school, or who are at risk high for either. It is also designed to assist in positive youth development and to discourage or prevent delinquency or truancy and reduce recidivism in the criminal justice system. The overall purpose is to “help juvenile offenders acquire the knowledge and skills that make it possible for them to live and function productively” and responsibly in a connected and lawful manner in their schools, families, and communities.
This mission and purpose is developed around and driven by information and research from the National Center for Juvenile Justice 2005 Advancing Competency Development: a White Paper for Pennsylvania and the Search Institute research, development and program of Developmental Assets.
